Five jobs to tackle in your garden this autumn

As summer fades, a little effort now sets your garden up for a healthy spring.

As the warm days start to shorten, autumn is the perfect time to get your garden in shape before winter sets in. A few simple jobs now will pay off with a healthier, tidier garden come spring. ## 1. Give your lawn some love Keep mowing while the grass is still growing, but raise the blade a little. Rake out moss and dead thatch, and consider an autumn feed to strengthen the roots for the cold months ahead. ## 2. Cut back and tidy Trim back spent perennials and give hedges a final shape before the frosts arrive. Clearing fallen leaves as they drop keeps your lawn healthy and your paths safe. ## 3. Clear gutters and hard surfaces Leaves and debris build up fast at this time of year. A good clear-out of gutters, patios and driveways prevents blockages and slippery surfaces over winter. ## 4. Plant for next year Autumn is ideal for planting spring bulbs and establishing new shrubs while the soil is still warm. A little planning now means a colourful garden when the season turns. ## 5. Look after your tools Clean, sharpen and store your tools before they sit unused through winter. It is a small job that saves time and money next spring.
